The forgotten Atomic Veterans
Between 1977 to 1980 as part of the Enewetak Atoll Radiological Cleanup operation a total of 5617 Veterans (2670 Army, 2207 Navy, and 740 Air Force) answered the “Call of Duty” being “Volunteered” to participate in a cleanup of forty islands Contaminated with Radioactive isotopes, other toxic waste and contaminated derbies. These Veterans worked 12 to 14 hour days six days a week for approximately $345.00 a month ($0.96 to $1.11/hr). Receiving personal mail, fresh fruit, vegetables and milk twice a week. Only once a week they received a five minute personnel call home to loved ones. Each of the Enewetak Atoll, Marshallese and their decedents received $400+ a month while absent from the Islands.
